AIDS THREAT TO BE KNOWN SOON
---------------
U.S. Surgeon General Everett Koop said Friday that AIDS researchers were on
the verge of determining the seriousness of the threat to the general
population. ''We could be facing an explosion in the heterosexual community as
we did in '81 or '82 in the homosexual community,'' he said on U.S.
television. ''Or it could just filter through the community. I think the next
six months will tell you whether we have to be as concerned about the
heterosexual transmission as many people think,'' he said, adding that AIDS
researchers were ''standing on the threshold of information that you'd like to
have. Hopefully people have heard our message and changed their behavior
patterns.''
A report released Thursday at the Third International Conference on AIDS
estimated a one-in-1,000 chance of an AIDS-infected man passing the disease to
an uninfected woman in a single sexual encounter. Doctor Warren Winkelstein,
who presented the University of California at Berkeley paper, said too few men
have contracted the disease from infected women to calculate men's risk of
being infected through heterosexual intercourse.
''The likelihood is that the spread of AIDS in the heterosexual community will
be limited to segmnents of the populations that engage in a lot of sexual
contacts,'' Dr. Winkelstein said. The university study also concluded that the
risk of AIDS infection is ten times greater in homosexual intercourse than in
heterosexual encounters.
