III. WE CAN KNOW THAT WE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE
A. 1 Jn. 5:13, "I [have] written unto you... that ye may KNOW
that ye have eternal life."
B. 2 Cor. 13:5, "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith;
prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves how that
Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?"
1. "Examine," To give a test and then compare to answer key
2. "Tests" (and trials) are easily seen, and complained of
3. "Answers" are harder to come by.
C. God wants to give us knowledge and teach us how to live to
have eternal life
1. Purpose of the Bible: To reveal TRUTH to mankind
2. Purpose of prayer: To give man access to the power of God
D. Phil. 2:12, "....Work out your own salvation with fear and
trembling."
1. Some would place the emphasis on the word "work"
2. Emphasis probably should be on the word "out" (ie. to
produce works OUT of your salvation)
3. Living Bible says, "Do the good things that result from
being saved, obeying God with deep reverence, shrinking
back from all that might displease him.
"For God is at work within you, helping you to want to
obey him, and then helping you do what he wants."
ALTAR CALL:
A. God wants you to have all the knowledge that you can use
B. He also wants you to use what knowledge you have already
C. You CAN make it to heaven:
1. Easily understood (Is. 35:8), "An highway shall be there
and a way, and it shall be called the way of holiness;
The unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for
those: the wayfaring men, though fools shall not err
therein."
2. Two ways: a highway and a way
3. Billy Graham says it is the same road, in the opposite
direction (ie. against the tide of opposition)
D. Which way will you choose in your quest for knowledge
1. God has said that even a fool has no reason to choose the
wrong road
2. Matt. 7:13,14, "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide
is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to
destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.
"Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which
leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."
ILLUSTRATION OF GOD'S POWER IN OPPOSITION TO MAN'S KNOWLEDGE
A. Icebergs on coast of Labrador heading south against the wind
B. Many would say it is scientifically impossible
C. Now have discovered:
1. Seven-eighths of bulk is underwater
2. Labrador current is strong to south
D. Likewise, God will guide us along even against opposition
