PERPETUAL VIRGINITY

BASIC R.C. BELIEF

After the fifth century, many excess of devotion to Mary began to spring

up. One was belief in her perpetual virginity (that Jesus was her only

child). One of the reasons for this was to encourage men and women to seek

celibate state as a higher level of spirituality. It came at a time when a

decadent society regarded maternity as inferior to virginity.

The scripture used for this is Ezekiel 44:2.

POST VATICAN II

In the Vatican II document OPTATIUM TOTIUS it says, "Virginal consecration

to Christ is of greater excellence than Christian marriage" (10/28/65).
