[Footnote 19: Yet  in  modern times, the Tyber has sometimes
          damaged the city,  and  in  the  years 1530, 1557, 1598, the
          annals of Muratori  record  three  mischievous and memorable
          inundations, (tom. xiv. p. 268, 429, tom. xv. p. 99, &c.)

          considerably  raised:  recent   investigations  seem  to  be
