a powerful and wealthy foundation, and the high priest was
respected as the second person in the kingdom. As the
sacerdotal office had been occupied by his mother's family,
Strabo (l. xii. p. 809, 835, 836, 837) dwells with peculiar
complacency on the temple, the worship, and festival, which
was twice celebrated every year. But the Bellona of Pontus
had the features and character of the goddess, not of war,
but of love.]
