[Footnote *: Le  Beau,  following Allemannus, conceives that
          Belisarius was confounded  with  John of Cappadocia, who was
          thus reduced to  beggary,  (vol. ix. p. 58, 449.) Lord Mahon
          has, with considerable  learning,  and on the authority of a
          yet unquoted writer  of  the eleventh century, endeavored to
          reestablish the old  tradition.  I cannot acknowledge that I
          have been convinced,  and  am  inclined  to subscribe to the
