118.1 have always entertained some doubts con-cerning the
retractation of Ursacius and Valens (Athanas. tom. i. p. 776
[tom. i. p. 139, ed, Bened 1777]). Their epistles to Julius
bishop of Rome, and to Athanasius himself, are of so
different a cast from each other, that they cannot both be
genuine: the one speaks the language of criminals who
confess their guilt and infamy, the other of enemies, who
solicit on equal terms an honourable reconciliation.
